Rainy Friday thoughts

(Boxcycle parked in the sprinkles and me under my umbrella)

1. When it's wet and drizzling out and I need to get somewhere fast and without any effort, I happily take the boxbike. It is really the easiest and effortless-est bike to ride.

2. The big box in front acts as a shelter for the front of my legs from the rain. If I lean in I can keep the tops of my legs from getting too soaked. In a drizzle this works.

3. I love the irony of packing my umbrella onto my bike.

4. Stopping too fast in the rain on a hill while turning slightly left to take the center of a lane results in big slippage of the slightly scary quality. Luckily I was the first in line at a red light and no one was behind me at all. Waved at the city car that paused seeing me slip and almost topple over. After I got into position I let myself yawn as if it was no big deal and took off on the green continuing to take the lane through that narrow Beacon street strip I spoke about yesterday.

5. I'm mostly a fair weather rider. I don't like downpours, but I do enjoy riding in drizzle- especially when it comes and goes and one never really gets too wet, but one seems totally badass being out there just the same.

  1. There is something nice about riding in rain, but not a full downpour. Given that I wear glasses, I really, really appreciate my Bern helmet with the brimmed insert when it's raining.

Glad the slippage didn't result in bad result and you could move along on you way.

  2. yes- I love the yakkay hat cover with a brim as I tilt my head down and my bangs and eyeglasses don't get wet too badly.

  3. I like your boxcycle. This looks like a great option for a mom who has lots of stuff to haul around.

I don't pedal in downpours either. This is when I feel like it's acceptable to use a car - or just stay at home and read a good book.

  4. Karen- I agree. I have been lucky to set up my life in a way that oftentimes I can choose to just stay home in the horrible weather. sometimes not... but it's nice to say " hey I'll just sit this one out".

  5. OK, it looks like it is OUR turn to go on the e-assist hunt. It's time to electrify our Yuba. Unfortunately, Cycle 9 is in transition and we cannot purchase a kit from them. Do you know of east coast dealers who specialize in e-assist kits?
